Northern Europe Cruise Port Guides: Things to Do & Tips

The white Erasmus Bridge stretches across the Nieuwe Maas river in Rotterdam with its tall angled pylon and cables creating a striking shape against the blue sky. Modern skyscrapers line the waterfront behind the bridge.

There’s plenty to see and do on a Northern Europe cruise, from exploring historic cities to wandering around pretty old towns.

I’ve visited several ports in Northern Europe on my cruises, and these guides share my experiences, ideas for things to see and do, and tips to help you make the most of your time ashore.

A row of historic brick and whitewashed buildings with stepped gables lines a canal in Bruges Belgium. The medieval architecture reflects the character of the old town with a tall bell tower visible in the distance beneath a clear blue sky.

Historic red brick warehouse buildings line both sides of a narrow canal in the Speicherstadt district of Hamburg Germany. A small bridge crosses the water in the distance beneath a blue sky.

PLANNING A NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISE

One of the things I like about Northern Europe cruises is the variety of places you can visit. Some ports are great for exploring independently, while others are a good starting point for a day trip further afield.

  • Check where your ship docks. Some ports are close to the city centre, while others require a shuttle bus, train or other transport.

  • Allow plenty of time for day trips. If you’re visiting Bruges from Zeebrugge or Paris from Le Havre, check journey times carefully and leave enough time to get back to the ship.

  • Don’t overlook the port city itself. Places such as Rotterdam and Hamburg have plenty to explore without travelling further afield.
